Denys Knight
Metal Art
Glass Art
Denys works mostly in copper using a method called ‘fold forming’. This is a technique of manipulating metal, in this case copper, into new forms and designs using hammers, vises, anvils, Drexel’s, jewelry making tools, chemicals, and heat.
She combines this with ‘flame painting’ which is the use of a torch on metal (rather than a paint brush) to achieve various color combinations, patterns, and representations. This technique can be combined with chemicals or used on its own. Because of the metal’s unique reaction to heat, no two pieces are ever alike.
Denys has 40 years of teaching lettering, color and fine detail painting, and design internationally. The transition from this to foldforming, pounding metal, and flame painting occurred almost naturally, incorporating years of experience in calligraphic design into the new medium.
Working with metal, and allowing it to find its sense of form without a contrived or forced plan is liberating. The metal gets to speak for itself. ‘Mistakes’ become new beginnings and new paths, and the nature of the metal controls the outcome of the creative design.
